Arrival:
Arrival in Cope was pretty seamless for me! After two flights with very little sleep I grabbed my bags, checked in with DIS, and loaded the bus off to Holmbladsgade. Yeah that is right! Holmbadsgade is the street I live on and I have yet to figure out how to pronounce it correctly. We got settled in and went on a little tour of my neighborhood.
Housing:
While in Copenhagen I will be living in the Outdoor Living Learning Community (LLC). DIS describes the LLC housing option as a co-curricular housing option that bring students with shared interests across DIS and cultivates their passions by allowing their extracurricular interests to shape the way they explore Copenhagen and encounter local culture. Well that was a mouth full! I can say, after, only being here for only a little over a week this is totally true. I have gone on a couple of adventures with people from my housing. I live in a room with two fantastic roommates, Alex and Taylor, and an apartment of eleven people. We share a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a living room! I am loving my housing so far and would totally suggest the LLC option.
Food:
This is the first time in my life when I will be cooking for myself. I am defiantly adjusting to this knew challenge. So far I have had pesto pasta with chicken almost every time I have prepared myself dinner. I am starting to learn how to meal prep and grocery shop effectively so I don’t have to go to Netto (the close and cheap grocery store) everyday! It took me awhile to find some peanut butter, but I just got some yesterday. So now I can have PB&Js for lunch! yay!!I I wanted to try smørrebrød, as seen in the picture below. I guess I will say this, I will never order this item again. The curry dressing was very delicious, but the fish was not up my alley.
Classes:
I am in love with my classes and my professors so far. This semester I am taking Human Health and Disease: A Clinical Approach, Epidemiology: A Danish Case Study, Conspiracy Theories and Historical Controversies, Ways of Seeing: Storytelling through Photography, and finally Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. All of my professors are professionals in their field and teach on the side. This is one thing that makes this study abroad program so unique. I have had about an hour of homework total each night so far. Lots of different readings that so far have been highly thought provoking and engaging.
Adventures:
During my free time I have been exploring Copenhagen’s coffee shops, bars, and outdoors! On Friday afternoon a group of us rode our bikes to Amager Strand and walked along the beach to find This past weekend Ailie, Emma, Flan, and I rode our bikes about eight miles to a tiny costal town of Dragor. It was one long bike ride, but it was totally worth it. It was nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of Copenhagen for the afternoon. We saw the most beautiful yellow houses and went to an adorable coffee shop. I can’t wait to keep exploring.
